As a guide I attract attention on the water and especially at boat launches. There is always interest in what I am up to. Folks frequently engage me in conversation and if I have time hang out a little. Yes, it’s true many of you are late so hanging out is usual. Some of those I am hanging out with have good thoughts to pass along. Some of those are wisdom for sure.
Today’s first comes from a retired lobsterman who saw that I would be in the boat alone on that morning and advised me to “stay in the boat”. Even if you are injured or passed out the boat is much easier to locate than a person in the water. Truly good advice that I keep in mind every day.
The second was from my first aid class last spring “accidents don’t happen first thing in the morning when everyone is fresh and just leaving the harbor. Rather they happen when everyone is tired from a long day and your guard is down”. The encouragement was to stay in shape and make sure that you take good enough care of yourself that a long day on the water does not make you an accident waiting to happen.
There you have two bits of wisdom that I learned this season and hopefully we both can use every day.
