Summer is here measured both in the calendar and by days length. At this point in my life there is great comfort in the normal pace of our lives and specifically the seasons. Yes, there are fishing trips several days a week with great folks and the garden is in growing as it should (broccoli ready to be harvested) and a big pile of firewood in the yard that has me stacking in 5 wheelbarrow loads into the garage each day. Not fast but steady is my motto I’ll get it all in before the snow flies late next fall.
In that regular seasonality there are differences and inflection points. This week Argy and I went out to Nicholas’ Cedar Island for an evening cookout with a friend. Simple to do and close enough to home, while returning to the boat launch that evening a large bird flew overhead. At first glance both Argy and I thought it was a Great Blue Heron but the shape and wingbeat were wrong. A second much closer look clearly saw it as a Sandhill Crane. A first for me here in Maine.
Not really a birding find they are well established a few dozen miles to the west of where we were and we had seen them by the hundreds in the Dakota’s many years ago. But a nice chance to get drawn up short by something different. A Similar event happened last week when ii was sitting on the deck in the evening and kept hearing a bird song I could not identify. I got out my phone and turned on the Merlin app and was quickly told it was an Indigo Bunting again not an unusual find at all but a new one for me locally.
I was reminded of how fortunate we are when I was asked excitedly by a visitor at the Public Landing in Thomaston if it was possible to see a Bald Eagle there. Of course, it is but they have become such a regular part of life that we do not take note beyond recognizing it as an eagle. Again, fortunate to have thema s a normal part of our lives every day.
If you would like to make an eagle sighting a part of your day or even just spend a little time on the water fishing please get in touch I always look forward to being part of your summer season.
