Oh The things You Might See

Today was my first trip down to the lower Saint George checking to see if there were stripers in the river. I’ll cut to the chase and tell you that yes they are here not in numbers yet but there are fish. My real story is that after checking below the harbor I decided to try above since in the past that was the best early season fishing.

It was the middle of the rising tide wo there was a lot of water flowing. Just right for someone who wanted to cover a lot of ground just to see what was around. As I drifted up through the narrows I could see a grey animal swimming across the channel in front of me. At first, I thought a raccoon but soon the grey coat and pointed ears had me thinking of a bobcat. I grabbed my phone and took a few truly lousy pictures. Look close and you can seee what looks like a dog in the water.

As the critter made the shore and headed up the bank it was clearly a coyote.

First one I have seen swimming and in a pretty tough spot for a swim with the tide running so hard. This was not far from the spot where a coyote had sat and watched for nearly an hour as a client and I caught stripers long ago. Guessing 30 years. At any rate you just never know  what you might see and walk away with a good story.
