Not the first family fishing trip of my season but the first one that looked like summer. Happy kids sure, parents ooh and ahhing sure, lots to see sure, lots of fish? Well after while but they sure were grumpy!
A big part of the summer feel is the birds that we see and hear. Eagles and loons certainly. Rose breasted grosbeaks singing yes. Actually, their song is my cell phone ringtone; most folks so not even recognize it as a recording and not a real bird in the background; which is my goal. But for about three weeks every spring I think my phone is ringing constantly.
Also singing loudly this morning were northern orioles. To complete the summer feel when I get home there are hummingbirds at the feeder, a catbird nesting in the rhododendron under the kitchen window, bluebirds in the box at the end of our driveway and goldfinches in the field across the street.
Clearly summer is here for the next few months.
