I attended the Maine Tourism conference for the last couple of days. It got me to thinking. About my long connection to the tourism industry. Granted, not many guides consider themselves to be part of tourism but that is changing, there were a few working guides in attendance. The simple fact is we are and have been since the beginning. In fact, Fly Rod Crosby Maine’s first licensed guide was a critical piece of early Maine tourism.
As you may know, our son Noah has his own guide service Equinox Guiding Service offering rock and ice climbing trips. He has built a good business and has certainly improved on the model I built.
At the conference there was a session called Building Maine's Workforce: A Model for Career Pathways in Tourism, Hospitality, and Outdoor Recreation Businesses
Industry leaders and educators will share how innovative partnerships between tourism, hospitality, and outdoor recreation businesses and Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are shaping Maine’s tourism workforce. This panel highlighted a model that directly connects high school students to careers in the industry, expanding students' career horizons and providing a talent pipeline for businesses.
Very proud dad moment to be certain and a delight to hear about how the relationship with the local school is working. Noah was confident, well spoken and articulate. Not to mention a pleasure to see him developing a professional attitude and helping the future. Proud of him to be sure.
