It is odd how things circle in life. Earlier this season one of my clients mentioned that turtles were a food source for bald eagles. I had not heard that, but it makes perfect sense. Turtles sun on logs and rocks during warmer months while eagles fly overhead along waterways fishing. We see both on most freshwater fishing trips during the summer and early fall.
Then yesterday on a visit to Cedar Island our son showed us a turtle shell that he had found on the island. Seemed odd at first but you can see an eagle nest on the next island over and there are lots of eastern painted turtles in the area, frequently sunning themselves in the afternoons on logs and driftwood.
I surmise that eagles can easily pluck a sunning turtle off of a log or rock and fly into a nearby tree to eat what they can easily get without having to open the shell. Anything left drops to the ground, in a little time the remaining soft parts rot and there you are!
If you pay attention, you can learn something almost every day. Pretty cool if you ask me.
