Youth Ice Fishing Event February 20th

For the last several years I have been helping my neighbors Scot and Mary put on two kids fishing events each year. One on the ice and one in open water. The next one will be February 20th. We would love to have join us! Details below.

In memory of Mike Sabins, a youth fishing event will be held at Ayer Park in Union on Saturday February 20th from 10 AM to 2 PM. Ayer Park is on Route 235 and was chosen because it is easy to find and is well suited to a children’s event. The event is sanctioned by the Hooked on Fishing program and equipment will be provided. Refreshments will be provided; children are encouraged to attend the event with an adult. The storm date is February 21st at the same times in the event of inclement weather on the 20th.

This event is the tenth and the fifth winter event for the Mike Sabins Memorial Youth Fish and Game organization. Last years event drew over 100 eager young anglers to the ice and fishing was very good under sunny but cold conditions. Expectations are high for this year’s event as well.

In response to the death of their son Mike; Scot and Mary Sabins are organizing a group focused on teaching Maine kids about their outdoor heritage. Mike was an avid hunter and fisherman. They hope to be able to offer events, activities and courses for young people to experience the Maine outdoors. Hooked on Fishing is a program to promote youth and family togetherness through fishing, and is run by the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to encourage youth fishing activities.

For more information about the event, or to offer help please call Scot and Mary at 785-4076.
