When I pulled out of the driveway earlier this week I was surprised to see one of the red maples across the street has started to change color. Then I had to go to Augusta this week and drove past the marsh near Traveller Pond in Coopers Mills where all of the maples are already completely red. Autumn is here for sure and fall is not far off.
There are other signs as well, the juvenile herring and alewives have begun to come out of the freshwater and into the salt in huge numbers. Just like last year I am amazed to see schools of juvenile fish measured in acres. I hope that the fall fishing is as good as it was last year. Although the striper fishing continues to be inconsistent at best I am sure we will see a flurry of activity in the next few weeks.
This is also the time of the year when the smallmouth bass fishing is at it’s absolute peak with the fish schooling up and associating with some structure to provide amazing action without even having to move the boat. With so many options it is hard to decide what to do each day.

No longer a secret, Maine is nationally known for bass fishing. Fish for smallmouths in secluded ponds with rocky shorelines. These aggressive fish are acrobatic and tireless. Largemouths lurk in weedy ponds and along lazy stretches of our rivers. Pick your passion bass can be taken with light spinning gear or flies.
