First Trip on Megunticook This Spring

Saturday was breezy and chilly with a clear blue sky, equipment is coming out of winter storage and ready to be used so Argy and I made a trip to Megunticook in Camden in the afternoon. The breeze was strong enough to make me seek the sheltered coves so that I could cast a fly. Still there were willing smallmouth bass and we enjoyed a few pleasant hours on the water. I landed a dozen fish with the biggest being about 3 pounds, did not have a chance to try my favorite trout spots the wind was simply too strong in those more open locations.

It made me appreciate how after all of these years I have been able to refine what I do to make an afternoon on the water as pleasant and successful as possible. From a fly pattern created for me specifically for the local waters, the ideal Orvis rod, line and reel combination; a boat set up for ease of launch and open enough to make fishing a pleasure; while handling the weather with ease

Not the least of these the knowledge of a water that comes from working as a guide for a long time and simply being in the right place with the right fly. I am looking forward to sharing those places with clients again this season.
